My friend excitedly told me she had adopted a rescue dog and asked if I had any ‘tips’ to start her off the way she means to go on as she had found that all of the information ‘out there’ was overwhelming. She wanted a trusted source to assure her that she was doing her best, not only in the early days, but every day.
Without stopping for breath, I covered; how to introduce the new dog, training as a lifestyle choice, more cues than she’ll probably need in the first year, enrichment ideas, a daily & weekly plan to ensure consistency, general training & behaviour advice, answers to the most common questions I’m asked, some trusted links, books & websites, canine body language and age-specific thoughts (the dog’s life-stage, not my friend’s!), an invitation to our canicross club and of course, some personal development & positive mental health ideas that she can learn with and from her dog.
I was only warming up but I saw her eyes had glazed over. Apparently my monologue of all the amazing things she could do and how her life and her new family member’s life is going to be enhanced in ways that they never dreamed possible only added to the overwhelm.
‘Jeez, if only you could put all that in one place so I could explore it in my own time!’ she said.
So, I did.
